Reaching the Un-Reached...

Introduction

Project: Tribal Upliftment.
Location: Madugula Mandal, Vishakapatnam, A.P – Around 500km from Hyderabad.

Description:

Madugula is a village(mandal), located around 50km from Anakapalli.
In co-ordination of a local(Madugula) based organization “Spurthi Grameenabhivruddi Samkshema Seva Sangam” who are already in action of uplifting their mandal villages of their reach, SCF have visited few tribal villages. Understanding the situations there, SCF wanted to work for the required.

Situations and Spurthi's work:

  • Most of the villages under this mandal are tribals. Wherein, few villages which are located nearby the highway are having a better living, but those which are located inside/away from main ways are much to get to normal living.
  • Though there are primary school blocks constructed in few villages around Madugula, as most of them are tribal and are located bit far from reach, schools don’t work as they have to. Understanding it Spurthi have identified 4 villages which closer to Madugula(Spurthi's place), and started to establish free tuitions with support of few donors. They are using the same school(primary) block to perform.
  • How these Tuitions work is…
School finishes by 3:30pm and these tuitions starts at 5pm to 7pm. There are around 35-40 students at each center, who are of different standards: Classes 1st-5th. Tutor is picked from the same village, who have done 10+2 or atleast cleared SSC (10th standard). He/She will be trained by Spurthi’s trustee members who are teachers by profession.
  • Spurthi trustee members conduct a session every month for all tutors in getting the updates and giving them the timetable for the next month of what and how to be taught: syllabus to be covered, techniques to help kids/students to learn etc

  • *This is not only giving better education for kids, but even providing employment to a villager (tutor).

After witnessing Spurthi's work and as their idealism is very close to of SCF, we collaborated with them in delivering service and enhancing SCF dream act ahead.

It’s a long time awaiting step from SCF to step in to tribal, in chasing our dream “ REACH THE UN-REACHED”.

    Action Plan:
Understanding that this is a big project, in terms of spending time to campaign conditions and putting efforts to understand.

    • First step: To make a base in that region and to start action, SCF will extend SPURTHI's initiation with a new center and taking complete care of it.
    • Parallelly to this (evening classes for tribal little ones) gets stabilized, SCF's will even take the next steps.
      - Village Adoption: Get in contact with student parents, understand their living, building trust, slowly into other villagers struggle and being NEEDFUL
      - Expansion to deeper Tribals: Efforts to get contacts in enabling to reach deeper areas who are completely OFF to the world, campaigning and understanding their situations and delivering services.

    UPDATES:
First step completed: SCF have campaigned 3 villages and picked a needy village: OntiKompa Sriramapuram. This is a village which don't have transportation: no bus facility and have to walk down 3km to reach the nearest transportation (autorickshaw point in the next village). Started the center from August, 2012. All the expenses of this center is taken care by SCF, which includes tutor's salary and few other basic needs of students like: stationary, school bags etc.
Advantage of evening school/classes: These classes are open for all age groups. Though kids/people go for work in morning hours still they(interested) have good chance to get education after their work in evening.

    Still way to go...

Summary from SCF Meet: July 22, 2012
    Brief Intro:
1st drive to Maadugula was to see the works of Spoorti Grameena Vidya Kendram.
2nd drive to Maadugula was planned as SCF could find the real needy village to serve ahead and hence the 2nd campaign drive was planned.
After hearing all the inputs from the ground work volunteers, there was a discussion and members were interested in one of the 3 campaigned villages which is located remotely from Maadugula Mandal.
Out of the 3 Villages shared, though members were interested to go with a village but due to some sensitive points, everyone came up with a decision to go ahead with "OntiKompa Sriramapuram" school.

    Summarising the discussion:
    I. Village Name: D. Suravaram
    Decision: Ruled out
    Reason:
    1. Comparitively better standard of living than the rest
    2. Located besides to highway
    3. More reachable

II. Village Name: Onti Maamidi Pallem
    Decision: Mixed views
The Campainged volunteers were really insterested in this village but few condition left in dilemma.
    Focus Points:
    1. The village is remotely located from Maadugula Mandal so people reaching this village for developing is almost negligible.
    2. The village atmosphere is backward (almost tribals) compared to other villages.
    Dilema Points:
    1. Spoorthi Grammena Trust din't show much confidence in Monitering this Village.
    2. Secondary Education is susceptible as., if we take up this - we may give only upto primary education.

    III. Village Name: OntiKompa Sriramapuram
Decision: YES, ready to pick up this
    Reason:
    1. 100% monitoring by Spoorthi Grameena Trust.
    2. Local Tutor available, no chance of the tutor to step out of this village as her birth place and in-laws place is the same village.
